Shoulder pain is most often caused by problems with the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is the collection of five muscles and their tendons that connect the humerus, shoulder blade, and collarbone in the ball and socket shoulder joint. The complex musculoskeletal arrangement allows the shoulder to have its wide range of motion.
When the rotator cuff becomes trapped beneath the bony area of the shoulder, the muscles and tendons get caught, causing injury of the nerves and pain. This condition is known as rotator cuff tendinitis. Another common cause of shoulder pain is bursitis, which is when the bursa (the fluid-filled pads that cushion the joints) becomes inflamed. Other issues that cause shoulder pain include:
Pain also may radiate from an injury or misalignment in the neck and back.
If rest and ice don’t help shoulder pain to recede in a couple of days, you should seek treatment with Dr. Campo, especially if your shoulder pain remains intense after several days of at-home care. You should seek immediate attention if you notice unusual warmth in your shoulders, have limited mobility in your arm, hear clicking when you move your arm, experience weakness, or experience any numbness or weakness down your arms.
There’s no reason to live with pain. In many cases, Dr. Campo can provide immediate pain relief with some chiropractic adjustments to restore correct alignment to your body.
Dr. Campo is concerned with helping you to improve your overall well-being and performs a thorough exam to identify the root cause of your shoulder pain accurately. Chiropractic treatment takes the whole body into account because patients often experience pain in the shoulders from misalignment in a completely different part of the body.
The prescribed treatment for shoulder pain should be based on the source of the pain. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Campo may suggest stretches and exercises you can perform daily at home to reduce pain gradually and improve range of motion in your shoulder. He may also recommend acupuncture or massage therapy to relieve any tension or trigger points in the surrounding muscles.
